If you love improv comedy on TV, you may pleasantly surprised to discover Tampa has its own improv troupe based out of Carrollwood Players Theatre.
Featuring a combination of novice performers and seasoned veterans making fools of themselves for your enjoyment, if you enjoy the short skits of Saturday Night Live combined with Who’s Line is it Anyway, you have the concept for Nine and Numb’s very funny unscripted comedy. Providing both a 9pm show and an adults-only afterhours 11pm show, for just $10, expect to laugh until your side hurts.
Beginning in January, Friday Night Open Mic with Nine and Numb offers the stage to variety talent from singers to comedians and everything in between. Performers are free with paying guest. Open Mic is 730-830pm.
The origins of this improv comedy troupe stem from the frigid north. In the spring of 2000, nine college students from the University of North Dakota took to the stage at Scott Hanson’s Comedy Gallery at the Fabulous Westward Ho entertainment complex in Grand Forks, ND. After the club closed in 2001, Nine and Numb moved their regular Tuesday night improv comedy show to Sensations Night Club across town. In 2003, Nine and Numb incorporated into a Limited Liability Corporation. Ten months later, the company expanded to include a sister troupe in Fargo, ND based at Courtney’s Comedy Club in Moorhead, MN and began its annual Halloween run of The Rocky Horror Picture Show – LIVE! at the Empire Arts Center in Grand Forks.
In 2005, the company’s President and CEO, Kelly Clow, took sole ownership of the company and moved Nine and Numb’s base of operations to Tampa, FL, where it performs regularly at the Carrollwood Players Theatre.
